Shattered – First Look

Today, we release a (very) first look at our upcoming title Shattered.

A short concept overview:

Shattered is a side scrolling platformer where you rearrange the landscape to solve the puzzles required to save the world.

Features

  • Unique gameplay in which the player rearranges the level’s landscape in order to collect new pieces of the world and solve the puzzle
  • Intriguing story which persists into the game world
  • 5 Detailed and Rich Worlds
  • Custom Soundtrack for Every Level
  • Mind expanding puzzles that build upon each other for a bigger challenge
  • Gameplay that doesn’t become frustrating through a unique checkpoint system

A much more detailed description will be online in the coming weeks, with a page devoted to the game and its features.

Here is Arthur exploring a forest, although he appears to not be colored yet.

We believe the art style suites our vision, and thanks to our amazing artist Alex, our vision can become a reality.

Introduction

After the feature post, I figured I would introduce myself as well. My name is Kevin Pfab, and I write the code for Bad Egg Studios, as well as some business related things and running the website. I’m a freshman Computer Science major at Virginia Polytechnical Institute, and have been playing video games my entire life. I was a computer nerd from the start, and have been hooked on programming every since I touched Adobe Flash back in my 8th grade year of middle school. I hope to bring you an excellent gameplay experience and to make somewhat of a splash into the indie game development field via Shattered.

Meet the Artist

Hello everyone! I‘m Alex and I will be responsible for all the art, character designs, and animations of this project. Hopefully next week I can put up a video showing everyone how a simple idea evolves into a finished in-game visual piece. I will also be posting images of concept art and in-game screenshots as time goes on.

Well I have a lot of work ahead of me so I’m going to get started, before Kevin freaks out about the deadline again.

Meet Trey Castle plus Audio Sample

Hey all, I’m Trey, and I do the music here at Bad Egg Studios. I wanted to take some time tonight to introduce myself, and give you all a bit of background on the man behind the music.

First off, music has been a hobby of mine since I picked up clarinet in middle school. For close to a decade I’ve played in various bands and orchestras, building my performance chops. Around my performance alongside the Richmond Symphony at the Kennedy Center in D.C., I realized I had reached my peak and started looking in other directions.

Upon arrival at Virginia Tech, Kevin and I became enamored with the idea of building a business or idea of some sort from the ground up. While it wasn’t limited to gaming, we fell comfortably and enthusiastically on Shattered. My background made game music a logical choice and interesting path to explore.

There will be plenty of blog entries to come from me, and the rest of the staff, but I’ll send you off with a portion of the song I’ve been working on today; enjoy!

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Trey, over and out.

Development Update

So we’ve decided that this first game is going to be quite the learning experience. It’s not just as simple as “Think the game up, make it, then say ‘Sup?’ to whoever we wanna sell it to.” In retrospect, it probably would have been a good idea to register the company with the state anyways, but eh, no one here claims to be a genius (especially the artist).

In the realm of good news, the game is moving along splendidly. Despite the name change (little known fact: the game was called Completion for a good month), progress is going great. The three levels for the demo have their framework up and running (OPTIMISM), now all that’s left is for us to bring Alex (lead artist) up from the basement to finish drawing and Kevin to stop breaking the game. And the music. And sound effects. And the rest of the game. Fingers crossed!

First Official Post

Hey, this is Cory with the first official post for the Bad Egg Studios development blog. We’ll be using this to give updates on our current and future projects (and probably mess with our associates as well).

At the moment the team is currently working on our first title Shattered. We recently hit quite a benchmark, actually managing to finish one of the early levels in-game. Finish, not quite finish with ease. When asked for a quote, Kevin responded with a quick stream of  expletives, so we’ll have to settle for “He’s working hard.”
